(CBS 11 News) GARLAND Today the City of Garland held an emergency preparedness drill of a new sort. City leaders want to make sure that during a public emergency they're able to get critical medicines to those who need it most.Wednesday two buses filled with volunteers hit the streets. The volunteers distributed 2000 bags, filled with surveys to help form a database of medicinal needs for residents.Garland Mayor Ronald Jones says he hopes the data is never needed, but they want to be prepared. "Disasters, both manmade and natural, can actually transform such a beautiful day as this into weeks, and even months, of extraordinary circumstances," he said.The city worked in conjunction with Dallas County Health and Human Services to test their ability to dispense needed medicines to the people. Instead of having residents go to one central location during an emergency, volunteers would come to them. (cont..)
