Drive-through clinic offers booster shots targeting hepatitis A (cover for highway POD)

There were no burgers or fries at this drive-through.
This weekend, hepatitis A booster shots are being given out drive-through style at the Amherst Highway Garage.
On Saturday, hundreds of people rolled down their windows and pulled up their sleeves to receive the booster shot in their arms — without leaving their cars.
“We’ve had minivans with entire families pull up and single cars, too,” said Daniel Neaverth, Erie County deputy commissioner of emergency medical services.
By 3 p. m., more than 300 people had participated.
The first doses had been given out in February after an employee at the Wegmans store on Sheridan Drive in Amherst tested positive for the contagious liver disease. More than 10,000 people got shots from the county over five days.
People receiving the follow-up shots Saturday were asked to first report to the Center for Tomorrow on the University at Buffalo’s North Campus to fill out paperwork.
They were then directed to the Amherst Highway Garage where they stayed in the cars and pulled up for the drive-through shot.
The idea was to administer the shots in the most efficient way possible.
But it also served as an exercise in giving out mass doses of a vaccine in the event of a pandemic outbreak or a biological attack.

Gates: Air Force may consolidate nuclear control WASHINGTON (AP) — A Pentagon advisory group recommended Friday that the Air Force, which has been embarrassed by a series of nuclear-related mishaps, should consolidate under a single organization the now-divided responsibilities for its nuclear weapons management.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the group made a strong argument for that action, but he was not sure how it would be implemented. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gqPgl6z7h9BESRIv3Hwp4kFC00KAD9359KG80
Virtual Reality Project Could Improve UAV Operations

The virtual reality environment will enable participants to see the vehicles, the surrounding airspace and the terrain they are flying over as well as information from instruments, cameras, radar and weapons systems. This approach can solve the critical operational and training challenges that must be overcome to allow an operator to simultaneously monitor and control several UAVs at the same time. http://www.spacewar.com/reports/Virtual_Reality_Project_Could_Improve_UAV_Operations_999.html Iowa State research to give UAV jockeys a virtual view of battle space http://news.cnet.com/8301-13639_3-10041189-42.html

U.S. pushing through dozens of foreign weapons deals http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/09/14/america/arms.php

WASHINGTON: The Bush administration is pushing through a broad array of foreign weapons deals as it seeks to re-arm Iraq and Afghanistan, contain North Korea and Iran, and solidify ties with onetime Russian allies.
From tanks, helicopters and fighter jets to missiles, remotely piloted aircraft and even warships, the Department of Defense has agreed so far this fiscal year to sell or transfer more than $32 billion in weapons and other military equipment to foreign governments, compared with $12 billion in 2005.
The trend, which started in 2006, is most pronounced in the Middle East, but it reaches into northern Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe and even Canada, through dozens of deals that senior Bush administration officials say they are confident will both tighten military alliances and combat terrorism.
"This is not about being gunrunners," said Bruce Lemkin, the air force deputy under secretary who is helping coordinate many of the biggest sales. "This is about building a more secure world." .....
