FEMA, Directed Energy Weapons, PMC News + Drills

Why FEMA Fakes it With the Press
Excerpt: "But here's the irony: in a way, FEMA had responded as it had trained to respond. Since 2000, the nation has held four full-scale exercises to simulate a major terrorist attack. Each time, the "mock media" is played by fake reporters — paid PR people, to be specific — just like in the fake FEMA press conference last week. "

Next Generation Materials for Defense

Evaluating the latest developments and suitability of Emerging TechnologiesDecember 10 - 12, 2007 · Hilton Arlington, Arlington, VA
Today’s military climate demands tomorrow’s materials. Lighter weight, stronger, and composites-driven the pressures to fast-track carbon-fiber, ceramics and nano- technologies into deployable warfigter solutions is increasing by the moment.
The Next Generation Materials for Defense conference is your gateway to these technologies of tomorrow. As current materials capabilities evolve, so does the Next Generation Materials for Defense conference. In December 2007, NGMD will deliver an agenda designed to open up discussion on the latest materials developments, and assess the suitability of these emerging technologies.

Key Presentations will address:
Nanomaterials
Current materials systems undergoing testing and evaluation at NASA and DARPA
Diamond Nanotechnology
Passive Nanotechnology and Structural Materials
Advanced Materials for Armor
Plasmonics
ARL Research and Development
Requirements and Updates for Advanced Materials
Carbon Composites
Corrosion Resistant Materials
Weapons Readiness and Sustainment (cont...)

Air Force Eyes Energy Shields, Microwave Bombs
http://blog.wired.com/defense/2007/10/af-on-de.html

Energy shields, microwave bombs, and laser-firing gunships -- those are just a few of the ideas the Air Force has in mind for its future arsenal.

Susan Thornton, head of the Air Force Research Lab's Directed Energy Directorate, laid out the sci-fi-style vision at the 33rd Annual Air Armament Symposium, held earlier this month. In it, she touts a high-powered microwave munition, capable of destroying of everything from "WMD Production Facilities" to "Cyber War Targets." The blasts from such a weapon "enables attack[s] on high value electronic targets with minimal collateral damage," Thornton notes, "virtually eliminating high post-conflict reconstruction costs!!!!" Directed energy weapons are not science fiction; the technology exists and is being refined.
Under a new Defense Department contract, QPC Lasers Inc. will produce high-power fiber laser pump engines for directed energy weapons applications. The company will increase the power from levels targeted in previous contracts and accelerates the development and delivery of high power laser prototypes for potential deployment.
The prototypes utilize QPC Lasers Inc. semiconductor laser technologies that are designed to greatly reduce the cost, size, and weight of the laser compared to conventional lasers. (cont...)
